NEW YORK--May 2, 2001

Business/Financial/Government Editors

The Asia Society invites internationally-focused investors, executives, financial and service professionals, journalists and other interested individuals to hear from leading experts on the investment opportunities that are emerging as a result of current trends in Asian fixed income markets.

This event entitled "Asian Debt Markets: Investment Opportunities for the 21st Century" will be held on May 17, 2001 at the Union Club (101 East 69th Street at Park Avenue) in New York City. Registration will begin at 10:00 AM and it will conclude at 2:00 PM following a luncheon session. The cost to attend this event will be $100 for members of the Asia Society, $125 for non-members and $60 for accredited academics and members of NGO's. Note: The Union Club requires jackets and ties for men and no press photography or cameras will be allowed.

The event is organized in association with Dalton Investments, LLC. HSBC Securities (USA) Inc. is the corporate sponsor and the luncheon sponsor is WL Ross & Co. LLC. The event is held in collaboration with the Emerging Markets Traders Association (EMTA), Global Equity Markets Association (GEMA) and KWR International, Inc. The Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly is the Media Sponsor and the speakers will include:

John Woods, Head of Asian Credit Research, HSBC Treasury and Capital Markets, Asia
Henny Sender, Staff Reporter, AWSJ/WSJ and Contributing Editor, FEER
Steve Persky, Founder/Managing Partner, Dalton Investments LLC
Jean-Louis Lelogeais, President, Moore Strategic Value Partners LLC
Michael Chamberlin, Executive Director, EMTA
Joyce Chang, Global Director, International Fixed Income Research, J.P. Morgan Chase
Wilbur L. Ross, Jr., Chairman and CEO, WL Ross & Co., LLC

"This conference is designed to better familiarize investors with the changes now taking place in Asia so that they will be better able to evaluate the risks and potential of Asian debt markets," stated Steve Persky, Managing Director of Dalton Investments LLC. "Superior performance in Asian high yield and distressed debt requires investors to have a viewpoint and skill base which is often markedly different from what is required in the U.S."

"The financial landscape in Asia has changed dramatically in recent years", noted Wilbur L. Ross, Jr., Chairman and CEO of WL Ross & Co., LLC. "Even before the 1997 financial crisis, Asia's expanding capital requirements necessitated a shift from its traditional reliance on commercial bank loans toward the greater liquidity and efficiency allowed by fixed income markets."

"If Asia's respective governments can draw any positive conclusions from Asia's extended crisis thus far", noted John Woods, Head of Asian Credit Research, HSBC Treasury and Capital Markets, Asia, "high on its list would be the observation that countries with robust domestic markets have weathered the storm appreciably better than those without."
